In Just Three Years, Over Half of all New – 3 Used Cars Will BE EVs

In June, 56.5% of all new cars registered, in what was a post-Covid record month, were EVs, and over 60% of these were Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs).

With the SMMT pointing to greater choice in BEVs and sustained discounting, it’s hard to see this trend being reversed, and it is a trend because in the year to date EVs accounted for 48.5% of all new cars registered.

The simple maths dictates that in three short years, if you want to buy a new-3 age used car, well over half will be EVs. Even extending this to cars up to five years old, a significant number will be EVs.

Given the trend towards used EVs this year and the running cost benefit on offer to anyone who can fit a home charger, it seems likely that there will be an increasingly willing audience ready to buy them.

The interesting factor will be how residual values hold up. Based on recent evidence, as reported by the Vehicle Remarketing Association, the ‘used electric vehicle market is at a ‘tipping point’ with demand outstripping stock.”

Is this a trend that will continue? It looks likely to me; I welcome all views.
